How to install a travel eSIM on iPhone and Android
By DMarketplace · · 4 min read
A travel eSIM is a mobile data plan that you download instead of inserting a plastic SIM card. Your phone keeps its home SIM, and you add the travel eSIM as a second line for data abroad. The setup takes a few minutes and works best at home on Wi-Fi, before you leave.
Before you start
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be locked to a carrier. If you are not sure, check both first: our compatibility guide shows where to look on iPhone and Android.
Connect to Wi-Fi. The phone downloads the eSIM profile over the internet, and Apple notes that an iPhone needs a Wi-Fi network or hotspot for activation in most countries.
Install the eSIM on the phone you will travel with. A QR code can usually be installed only once, so do not scan it with a second device and do not delete the eSIM after installing it.
Install the eSIM on an iPhone
After payment, open your order on DMarketplace and choose Show installation details. The page shows a QR code and the manual details (SM-DP+ address and activation code).
- On the iPhone, open Settings, tap Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions), then tap Add eSIM.
- Choose Use QR Code and scan the code. If the QR code is on the same iPhone, choose to enter the details manually and paste the SM-DP+ address and activation code instead.
- Tap Continue and Add Cellular Plan. Enter a confirmation code only if one is shown with your eSIM.
- Give the new line a label such as Travel, and keep your home line as the primary line for calls and messages.
Install the eSIM on an Android phone
Menu names differ between manufacturers and Android versions, but the steps are the same: add a SIM, choose eSIM, then scan the QR code or enter the details manually.
- On a Google Pixel, open Settings, tap Network & internet, then SIMs, then Add SIM, and follow the eSIM setup. On Samsung Galaxy phones the option is usually under Connections, then SIM manager, then Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code from your order details, or choose to enter a code manually and use the activation details shown there.
- When the phone asks for SIM preferences, keep your home SIM for calls and texts.
Switch data to the eSIM when you arrive
Our plans are data only: they have no phone number. Your home line can stay on for calls and messages, while mobile data runs over the travel eSIM.
Check when your plan's validity starts. Some plans start at installation, others at the first connection at your destination; the product page shows which one applies under Validity starts.
- Turn on the travel eSIM line if it is off.
- Select the travel eSIM for mobile data. On iPhone this is Settings, Cellular, Cellular Data; on Android it is in the SIM settings under Mobile data.
- Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM. Travel eSIMs connect through partner networks, so they need roaming on even though you pay no roaming fees to your home carrier for this data.
- To avoid charges from your home carrier, turn off data roaming for your home line or switch mobile data away from it.
If the eSIM does not connect
- Check that the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data and that data roaming is on for that line.
- Make sure you are inside the plan's coverage. Regional plans list every country they cover on the product page.
- Restart the phone, or turn airplane mode on and off, so it searches for a network again.
- Do not delete the eSIM. Contact support with your order number; an installed QR code usually cannot be installed again.
