Amazon gift cards: choose the right country and currency
By DMarketplace · · 3 min read
Before choosing an Amazon gift card, check where the recipient actually shops. Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de have separate gift card rules. The Amazon logo alone does not establish where a code can be redeemed, and a familiar currency symbol is not enough to make that decision.
Match the gift card to the Amazon store
For these three markets, use the following store and currency combinations as your starting point. Then read the selected card’s redemption details before paying.
Amazon’s UK terms specifically exclude redemption on Amazon.com and Amazon.de. Amazon’s US and German payment help likewise ties gift cards to the relevant Amazon website and eligible purchases. Each market’s terms determine the precise scope.
| Market | Amazon store | Gift card currency |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Amazon.com | USD |
| United Kingdom | Amazon.co.uk | GBP |
| Germany | Amazon.de | EUR |
The same currency does not mean the same store
The practical consequence of those store restrictions is that EUR alone does not prove a card will work across European Amazon sites. Check the named store, rather than assuming an Amazon.de card is interchangeable with a card for another euro-denominated marketplace.
Also distinguish the gift card’s face value and currency from the price shown while shopping. A converted display price helps you compare costs; it does not change the Amazon store for which the card was issued.
What to check on the product page
Start with the Amazon gift card hub on DMarketplace and open the option you are considering. Check these details together, especially when buying for someone else:
- Confirm the recipient’s intended Amazon website, including its country domain.
- Read the product’s redemption country, card currency and any restrictions. If the intended Amazon store is unclear, ask for clarification before buying.
- Check the selected gift card value separately from the purchase price and payment amount.
- Before entering the code on Amazon, confirm that you are on the intended Amazon website and signed in to the correct account.
Changing account country does not move the balance
Amazon’s account-country help says gift card balances stay in the original marketplace when an account is transferred. Do not treat a country-setting change as a way to move redeemed credit to another store. Check the destination before adding the code to an account.
Can you use the balance with Amazon Pay?
Amazon Pay is a separate checkout service. Amazon’s US and German help pages state that Amazon gift cards cannot fund orders placed through Amazon Pay. Seeing an Amazon Pay button on another retailer’s website therefore does not make your Amazon gift card balance a payment option there.
